How to cope with cultural dilemmas in an increasingly globalized world?

What comes to mind when say culture? Everyone said something:

   

      THE CONCEPT OF CULTURE;

      

•  individual and collective lives of a group of  people, beliefs
•  historically, all the material and spiritual values created in the process of social development
• Social heritage of the people
• the tacit knowladge, the meanings and values that we share but we do not know it beforehand
• everyone in a culture does know share the same values

     THE CONCEPT OF DILEMMAS;

• some cultures are better and more right than others
• there are many different cultures in the world
• all human cultures are essentially the same
• if you are living in another culture, you have to get used to them and do your best to adapt
• many students will encounter diverse cultures
• each teacher must go on a journey to uncover how cultures influence families, government, language and where people live
• cultural diversity among classroom members, both teachers and students, is inevitable

We read 'body ritual among the Necirema' in the class and discuss this text. About text; Nacirema culture, the culture of this people is still very poorly understood. They are a North American group living in the territory between the Canadian Cree, the Yaqui and Tarahumare of Mexico, and the Carib and Arawak of the Antilles.
And then we answered questions about; 'What would you do if you were in such a case' and we discussed with our group mates.


     QUESTIONS PREPARED BY THE TEACHER
ü  Why is it important to be aware of and have knowledge about the concept of culture when working as a social worker or teacher?

A teacher should be aware that national culture and must teach students. In other words, the teacher must  teach the national and spiritual values. Also In most educational contexts around the world, cultural diversity among classroom members, both teachers and students, is inevitable.

ü  What challenges do you see in the concept of culture?

The educational outcomes of such differences may be lower self-esteem, misbehavior or academic underachievement. It is possible for cultural differences to interfere with his/her effectiveness as a teacher.

ü Is the concept usefull when we talk about human differences?

If yes why? If nı why?

Yes, because culturel differences can cause human differences.

ü How is the concept used within your profession?

School cultures determine the way teachers and student communicate, the rules for talking, how much open discussion there is in class, how students feel, and how critical thinking is respected.
